JB Somers’ ‘Talk’ Hits Where It Hurts—in the Silence Between the Words
‘Talk’ by JB Somers Explores the Struggle When Any Connection Feels Better Than None
The first time I heard “Talk” was at the Big Daddy showcase in Nashville. JB Somers performed it with two background vocalists, and the moment was absolutely electric. You could hear a pin drop in the room. His vocals, paired with the harmonies and raw lyrics, made the performance both heart-wrenching and breathtaking. It was one of those rare moments where music doesn’t just sound beautiful—it feels like truth.
The lyrics hit me right in my gut. They’re honest, vulnerable, and deeply human. While the message could resonate with anyone, this track is deeply personal for JB, touching on his own experience with his family. And honestly, it’s incredibly relatable.
The song explores the sadness and loneliness that exist in empty conversations. While it could apply to any kind of relationship, this one is hyper-focused on JB’s personal experience with his parents, and honestly, I can relate. “Talk” explores the kind of silence we all fall into, especially with the people we love most. Sometimes we avoid the hard stuff, skating around the truth just to maintain some kind of connection. Because honestly, any connection can feel better than none at all. So we ask about the weather or how work’s going instead of naming what’s really going on beneath the surface. It becomes a cycle. Either we keep the peace with meaningless small talk, or we risk everything by confronting what actually needs to be said. And when we do that, someone usually ends up hurt—or we stop speaking altogether. JB captures that ache so clearly in this song. The quiet grief of wanting more but not knowing how to get there. It's heartbreaking and so real.
What makes JB Somers stand out is his ability to stir up feelings within the listener and help you connect with what he’s feeling. His music, especially “Talk,” is a masterclass in emotional songwriting. It’s raw and personal.
Written by Nell Maynard, Fran Litterski, and JB Somers, the song was brought to life with production by Austin Cannon and Matty Marxx, mixing by Matty Marxx, and mastering by Adam Grover. It’s a beautiful collaboration that lets JB’s voice and message take center stage.
And we couldn’t be more excited for what’s next. JB’s EP, “Love, Myself,” drops on June 27, and if “Talk” is any indication, it’s going to be something truly special.
We also got the chance to ask JB a few things, and here is what he had to say:
Is it scary to release a song so personal, knowing the people you wrote it about will hear it?
“It’s terrifying to create something that means so much to me — especially when it’s about people I love and cherish. But I think that’s the point. That’s how we connect through art: by being as authentic as possible. It’s not just something I want to do — it feels like something I have to do. It’s a spirit in my bones that needs to be released, that needs to be heard. Yes, it’s scary. But being open and honest is what makes people feel safe with the kind of music I create. Knowing that I’m showing up as my truest and most authentic self — that matters to me.”
What do you hope they feel when they hear it?
“I hope they hear the pain — the loss that comes from them not being in my life as much. That we talk, sure, but we don’t go deep. I hope they hear the cry for more, for the kind of depth and connection I crave so desperately. I hope it makes them want to pick up the phone and talk to me. I hope it leads to reconciliation, whatever that ends up looking like.”
